Showmax launched in Nigeria in 2019 and quickly became a pivotal platform for local storytelling, commissioning dozens of titles and thousands of hours of original Nigerian content. However, after seven years of operation, MultiChoice has decided to migrate its offerings to DStv Stream.

Eligible Showmax subscribers will receive trial access to DStv Stream Compact until May 31, 2026. This offer is specifically for those who do not have an active DStv subscription and who subscribed directly to Showmax. After this trial period, customers can continue their subscription at N6,500 per month for 12 months.

This transition means that a curated selection of popular Showmax Originals—such as Wura, Flawsome, Cheta M, and The Real Housewives of Lagos and Abuja—will now be available on DStv Stream. These shows have played a crucial role in promoting Nigerian storytelling on a larger scale.

ID Africa remarked, “The curtain may have closed on Showmax, but the stories that made it special are far from over.” This sentiment reflects the ongoing demand for local narratives that resonate with audiences across the continent.

Industry experts are closely watching how this consolidation will impact the competitive landscape among streaming services. With Canal+ having acquired MultiChoice, they now have access to a staggering 40 million subscribers, which could reshape viewer preferences and choices.

Rogers Ofime, a notable figure in Nigerian media, noted that having a platform invest significantly in local content is a game-changer: “To have a platform say, ‘We believe in this world enough to let you build it over 200-plus episodes’ is transformative.” This investment validates the ambition of local creators and showcases the potential of original content.

The future of Nigerian storytelling remains bright despite this shift. As James Omokwe stated, “They validated our ambition by providing the resources to match it.” This indicates that while one platform may close its doors, others will undoubtedly rise to fill the gap.
