The global call for gender equality remains unfinished business. As we approach International Women’s Day 2026, the theme is set as ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.’ This theme underscores the urgency of addressing gender disparities that persist across various sectors, including politics, where gender parity in parliaments could still be decades away at current rates.

Breaking Development

In Nigeria, the Nigerian Ports Authority has made significant strides, with women holding 60% of key roles within the organization. This achievement is celebrated as a testament to the contributions of women in the maritime sector, emphasizing their vital role in driving progress and innovation.

Statements from Key Parties

Sen. Oluremi Tinubu remarked, “When women rise, Nigeria rises!” highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment as an investment in the collective future of the nation. The first woman from Africa to serve as Commonwealth Secretary-General has also echoed sentiments around the need for action, stating, “Climate justice is gender justice,” and emphasizing that “Women and girls are not victims of change: they are leaders of it.”

Looking Ahead

As Commonwealth countries supported the Belém Gender Action Plan at COP30, observers are hopeful that these commitments will translate into tangible actions. The call to “turn commitments into action, action into measurable progress, and progress into lasting, intergenerational change” resonates strongly as we move forward.

Overall, the celebration of International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges and the collective efforts needed to achieve gender equality for all women and girls.

International Women’s Day: A Call for Rights, Justice, and Action

“Women are key stakeholders in every sphere of development, and their contributions cannot be overemphasised,” stated Hon. Dr. Sarah Enoch Adi, the Taraba State Commissioner of Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning. This declaration comes as the world prepares to observe International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, under the theme ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls’.

International Women’s Day, celebrated annually, serves to honor women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality. The historical roots of this day trace back to the labor and women’s rights movements of the early 20th century, with the first official celebration occurring in 1911. The United Nations began recognizing this day in 1975, marking a significant commitment to women’s rights globally.

Despite progress, women continue to face significant challenges. Currently, they account for over 60 percent of new HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the urgent need for targeted health interventions. Furthermore, women globally possess only about 64 percent of the legal rights that men enjoy, a disparity that underscores the necessity for continued advocacy and reform.

Echey Ijezie, a representative from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria, emphasized the importance of prioritizing issues that affect women. “We will continue to prioritise issues that affect women as we call on everyone, leaders, policymakers and communities, to turn their commitments into action to accelerate development for women and young girls,” he remarked. This sentiment resonates with the ongoing efforts to empower women and girls, particularly in regions where they are disproportionately affected by health crises and legal inequalities.

The Taraba State Government has also expressed its commitment to creating opportunities that empower women. This aligns with broader initiatives, such as the Belém Gender Action Plan, which was supported by Commonwealth countries at COP30 to enhance gender-responsive climate action. The plan recognizes that climate justice is inherently linked to gender justice, reinforcing the idea that women’s rights must be integrated into environmental policies.

As International Women’s Day approaches, organizations like AHF Nigeria are set to commemorate the occasion on March 9, 2026, across various states in Nigeria. These events aim to raise awareness and foster discussions around the rights and empowerment of women and girls, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs addressed.

In a world where women are still fighting for equality and recognition, the call for rights, justice, and action remains vital. The upcoming International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the progress made and the work that still lies ahead. Together, we can build a Commonwealth where every woman and every girl has full rights and full power, a vision that is crucial for sustainable development and social justice.

The global call for gender equality remains unfinished business. As we approach International Women’s Day 2026, the theme is ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.’ This theme underscores the necessity of advocating for women’s rights and ensuring their voices are heard in all sectors.

Current Developments

In Nigeria, the Nigerian Ports Authority has made significant strides, with women holding 60% of key roles, while men occupy the remaining 40%. This achievement is a testament to the growing recognition of women’s capabilities in traditionally male-dominated fields.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, the first woman from Africa to hold this position, has expressed her support for gender equality, stating, “Happy International Women’s Day.” This sentiment resonates with many as countries work towards strengthening gender-responsive climate action.

Statements from Key Figures

Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, CON, emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment, stating, “When women rise, Nigeria rises!” This highlights the belief that empowering women is not only beneficial for individuals but also for the nation as a whole.

Furthermore, the Nigerian Ports Authority celebrates the contributions of women in the maritime sector, recognizing that these remarkable women are excelling even in roles that traditionally demand male-kind of strength.

Looking Ahead

As the world observes International Women’s Day, it is crucial to remember that climate change is not gender-neutral; women are often the first and hardest hit in vulnerable countries. The ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and climate justice are intertwined, as climate justice is viewed as gender justice.

Observers note that while progress has been made, achieving gender parity in parliaments could still take decades at current rates. The Belém Gender Action Plan, supported by Commonwealth countries at COP30, aims to address these disparities.

As we celebrate this happy international women’s day, the focus remains on empowering women as leaders of change, not victims of it. Empowering women is an investment in the collective future of communities and nations.
