Halima lives with her four children in a camp for displaced people in Gedaref, Sudan. Amid the ongoing crisis that has forced many like her to flee their homes, she found unexpected joy this Eid al-Adha through the gift of qurbani meat. “We haven’t eaten meat for months; we didn’t expect to get meat this Eid either,” she shared, reflecting on the significance of this occasion.

Before this moment, Halima and her family faced dire circumstances. The war in Sudan has persisted for three years, and basic necessities have become luxuries. Many displaced families struggle to find food and shelter while grappling with the emotional toll of their situation. But this year, thanks to organizations like Islamic Relief and Kızılay, hope emerged in the form of qurbani distributions.

In 2025 alone, more than 92,500 people in Sudan received qurbani meat packs from Islamic Relief. This effort is part of a larger initiative that reached over 3.2 million people across 29 countries. The distribution of qurbani meat is not just about food; it symbolizes community support and humanitarian aid during challenging times.

That context matters because it highlights the importance of proxy sacrifice campaigns like those launched by Kızılay. In 2026, they expanded their efforts to include 31 countries, allowing donors to contribute through proxy sacrifices for those who cannot afford it themselves. For instance, proxy sacrifice fees are set at TL 17,250 (approximately $382) for donations within Türkiye and Gaza/Palestine.

This initiative is crucial as it enables organizations to convert fresh meat into canned products—an approach that allows storage at room temperature for up to two to three years. Fatma Meriç Yılmaz from Kızılay explained how this system supports food security for many vulnerable communities: “Our system is based on converting meat into canned products, allowing it to be stored safely at room temperature for up to two to three years.” This method ensures that families can access protein-rich food even when fresh supplies are scarce.

The impact of these distributions reaches beyond mere sustenance. For families like Halima’s, receiving qurbani meat restores a sense of normalcy and celebration during Eid al-Adha—a holiday that means everything to them. As Halima put it simply yet profoundly: “Eid al-Adha means everything to me.” It’s a reminder that even amid hardship, joy can still find a way in.

The situation in Gaza also reflects similar efforts where nearly 929,600 people received canned meat from Kızılay in 2025. These initiatives underscore the critical role humanitarian aid plays in alleviating suffering and fostering resilience among displaced communities.

This year’s Eid al-Adha serves as a powerful reminder that compassion can bridge divides—even in times of conflict. As organizations continue their work across different regions, the hope remains that more families will experience such unexpected joy during these significant moments.
