<p>The Luz de Agua programme has been in operation for nearly three decades, driven by communities in isolated mountainous areas. This initiative has led to the establishment of numerous micro-hydropower projects, significantly improving electricity access in rural regions. Currently, the Dominican Republic boasts an installed hydropower capacity of 623 megawatts, with 48 operational micro-hydropower projects under the Luz de Agua programme.</p>
<p>The first of these micro-hydropower plants, the El Limón Community Hydropower Plant, was installed in 1998, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for energy access in the country. The El Palero Community Hydropower Plant, another notable project, supplies energy to 180 households, demonstrating the tangible benefits of these initiatives. The total cost for constructing the El Palero plant was RD 84,767,311.40 (USD 1,353,037.18), a significant investment that underscores the commitment to enhancing energy infrastructure.</p>
<p>Electricity access has improved for more than 22,000 people across over 5,000 households, thanks to community micro-hydropower plants. This development has led to a remarkable decrease in energy expenses for communities, with reports indicating a reduction of more than 60 percent in energy costs. Families that previously faced high monthly tariffs, ranging from RD 400.00 to RD 700.00, are now benefiting from more affordable energy solutions.</p>
<p>However, the journey has not been without challenges. The average duration for constructing micro-hydropower plants can take up to six years, which may delay the benefits for communities in need. Despite these hurdles, the commitment to renewable energy remains strong, with the potential to absorb 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year through these projects.</p>
