On April 27, 2026, residents of Lagos State protested against Ikeja Electric, demanding immediate improvements in power supply after enduring months of outages. Communities like Abule Oja and Abule Ijesha have faced severe disruptions since November 2025, affecting their daily lives and businesses.

The protest erupted as residents expressed frustration over the prolonged power shortages. Many reported receiving less than 16 hours of promised daily power supply. Two weeks were given by Ikeja Electric for residents to expect any improvement, but skepticism remains high.

That context matters because the situation is not isolated. Ikeja Electric attributed the ongoing power interruptions to a significant reduction in electricity allocation from the national grid. This has forced the company to implement controlled rationing, commonly referred to as load shedding, to manage the shortfall and maintain system stability.

In response to these challenges, the Lagos State Government has taken steps to alleviate the crisis by signing power purchase agreements with three independent power producers. However, it remains unclear how quickly these measures will translate into improved service for residents.

Interestingly, while grappling with power issues, Ikeja Electric also marked World Malaria Day with community health outreach initiatives in nearby communities like Abule-Egba and Odogunyan. These efforts included malaria testing and distribution of treated mosquito nets and antimalarial medication.

The dual focus on health outreach amid ongoing power supply struggles raises questions about priorities. “Power is a right, not a privilege,” stated one protester, encapsulating the sentiments shared by many during the demonstration.

Another protester emphasized their demand: “We want consistent and stable electricity in reasonable supply, not minutes.” Such statements highlight the urgency felt by residents who are weary of unreliable electricity.

Ikeja Electric acknowledged these frustrations through spokesperson Kingsley Okotie, who stated, “We sincerely regret the ongoing power supply challenges currently affecting some areas within our network due to reduced power allocation from the grid.” This admission reflects an awareness of the impact on community well-being.

As frustrations mount and protests continue, residents remain hopeful for change. The next two weeks may prove critical in determining whether Ikeja Electric can deliver on its promise of improved service or if further unrest will follow.
