For years, thousands of Nigerian graduates have faced systemic barriers that hinder their access to international scholarship opportunities. A recent survey revealed that while 75% of respondents expressed a strong willingness to apply for scholarships within the next year, nearly two-thirds lacked the confidence and knowledge to navigate the application process.

However, a decisive moment arrived with the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) announcing its Overseas Scholarship Scheme. This year, the PTDF received an impressive 38,398 applications for both MSc and PhD programs, a significant increase of 31% from the previous year when 29,000 applications were submitted.

The immediate effects of this surge in applications are notable. The PTDF has commenced interviews for 5,885 shortlisted candidates, a 17.7% increase from 5,000 candidates shortlisted in 2025. These interviews are being conducted simultaneously across six centers nationwide, ensuring a broad and equitable selection process.

Dr. Olumuyiwa Igbalajobi, who conducted the survey involving 250 students and recent graduates, highlighted that financial constraints remain a significant barrier. He noted, “Financial constraints also featured prominently, with respondents citing application fees, cost of obtaining international passports and other related expenses as significant barriers.”

Despite these challenges, the PTDF’s selection process adheres to federal character principles, which aim to ensure equitable state representation. Bashir Ahmed Rufai remarked, “The process so far is very satisfactory. There are individuals from the Federal Character Commission who have attested to that. We have a very robust selection exercise.”

Furthermore, partnerships with countries like the UK, Germany, France, and Malaysia are expanding, providing more opportunities for Nigerian graduates. Bello Mustapha emphasized that the final selection is based on federal character, ensuring that each state is allocated a certain number of slots.

As the scholarship landscape evolves, it is clear that while opportunities are increasing, systemic barriers still pose significant challenges for many. The PTDF’s efforts to streamline the application process and enhance accessibility are crucial steps in addressing these issues.
