Background on Leprosy in Vietnam

Most leper colonies in Vietnam were established from the early 20th century to the 1960s and 1970s in remote, isolated areas due to fears of spreading the disease. These colonies have been a significant part of Vietnam’s health history, with many patients facing stigma and isolation.

Recent Developments

In a remarkable development, Vietnam has reported only 38 leprosy cases detected in 2025, marking the lowest annual number of cases ever recorded. Currently, all provinces and cities in Vietnam have been recognized as leprosy-free zones, with only sporadic cases occurring.

Despite the low number of new cases, there are approximately 6,000 leprosy patients nationwide, most of whom are individuals who have previously had the disease and have since recovered from the bacterial infection.

Community Support and Recognition

Sister Nurse Anna Nguyen Thi Xuan, who has dedicated nearly 40 years to caring for patients at the Qua Cam leper colony, has been awarded the Third Class Labor Medal by the President of Vietnam for her efforts. Her work exemplifies the commitment of healthcare professionals in supporting marginalized communities.

Patients like Mrs. Lo Thi Coc reflect on their past struggles, stating, “Back then, my family and I were really struggling, we were very poor, and no one wanted to be close to us for the fear of being infected.” This highlights the ongoing challenges faced by those affected by the disease.

Future Initiatives

In a positive step forward, the Diocese of Thai Binh is building a new facility to serve as a home for those suffering from leprosy. This initiative aims to provide better living conditions and support for patients.

Additionally, the Lunar New Year of Horse was celebrated on February 5, 2026, with leprosy patients at Dong Tho Chapel, Thai Sa Parish, showcasing the community’s efforts to integrate and support individuals affected by the disease.

As Vietnam continues to make strides in public health, observers note that the focus will likely remain on maintaining these low numbers and improving the quality of life for those still affected by leprosy.
