In a significant update, the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has announced an extension for filing individual annual income tax returns from March 31 to April 30, 2026. This decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to enhance tax compliance among residents.

Similarly, the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has also extended its deadline, allowing individuals to file their annual tax returns until April 14, 2026. This two-week extension aims to provide taxpayers with additional time to meet their obligations.

The statutory deadline for filing individual annual income tax returns remains March 31 each year, but these extensions reflect a proactive approach by the tax authorities to facilitate compliance.

FCT-IRS emphasizes the importance of electronic filing through its secure and efficient tax portal, which is the approved method for submitting annual returns. The LIRS also mandates that individuals file their returns exclusively through its user-friendly eTax portal, available 24/7.

Mr. Michael Ango, the Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, stated, “Individuals should prioritise the timely filing of their annual income tax returns,” highlighting the importance of meeting tax obligations. Meanwhile, Ayodele Subair, the Executive Chairman of LIRS, noted that “compliance should be embedded as a routine personal practice.”

In Rivers State, the Rivers Internal Revenue Service (RIRS) is encouraging businesses to protect themselves from violent and fraudulent revenue collectors. The RIRS has suggested the establishment of a one-stop-tax centre to improve tax compliance in the region.

Israel Egbunefu, the Executive Chairman of RIRS, mentioned, “The system is being digitised,” indicating a shift towards more modern and efficient tax collection methods.

These developments underscore the commitment of Nigeria’s internal revenue services to enhance the tax filing process and improve compliance rates among individuals and businesses.

As the new deadlines approach, taxpayers are urged to take advantage of the extended periods to ensure their returns are filed accurately and on time.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further changes or additional measures that may be introduced by the tax authorities in the coming months.
