The wider picture

The National Community Food Bank Programme is designed to establish community-based food banks in every Local Government Area, linked to Basic Health Care Provision Fund-supported Primary Health Care centres. This initiative aims to combat the growing issue of food insecurity in Nigeria, which has been exacerbated by rising costs of living and economic challenges faced by many households.

On April 2, 2026, a significant development occurred as the programme received pledges totaling over N66 billion at its launch in Abuja. Among the key contributors, the Aliko Dangote Foundation committed N20 billion in-kind support over five years, while the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited pledged N10 billion during the same period. Additionally, the Federal Government approved a special intervention of N17 billion through the Social Action Fund.

Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, also played a pivotal role in this initiative, pledging N500 million to support the food bank. In her statement, she emphasized the importance of building a strong and effective food bank system in Nigeria, governed transparently and capable of reaching communities across the country. “Our goal is to build a strong and effective food bank system in Nigeria that is supported through a well-structured trust fund,” she remarked.

The launch was marked by various reactions from key stakeholders. Chidioke James, representing the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, stated, “Today is not just about launching a fund. It is about launching hope. No society can truly prosper while hunger persists. We are very proud to stand with the mother of the nation, the First Lady.” Meanwhile, Hamisu Mohammed highlighted the initiative’s timeliness, noting that it comes at a critical moment for food insecurity and rising living costs.

In addition to these pledges, the Emeka Offor Foundation contributed N500 million upfront, and anonymous friends of the First Lady donated $500,000 (approximately N750 million). If all 36 state governors contribute N500 million each, an additional N18 billion would be added to the fund, significantly enhancing the programme’s capacity to support those in need.

Prof. Ali Pate, in his remarks, confirmed the government’s commitment to the initiative, stating, “His Excellency, Mr President, has already approved the special intervention of N17 billion through the Social Action Fund that will procure using the community-based procurement platform in each of the wards of our country, using a simplified procurement mechanism to buy locally.” This approach aims to ensure that the funds are utilized effectively and that local communities benefit directly from the support.

The programme targets 500,000 households across Nigeria in its first year, aiming to provide essential food supplies to those most affected by food insecurity. Observers believe that this initiative could lead to a significant reduction in hunger and improve the overall well-being of many families across the nation.

As the programme unfolds, the focus will remain on its implementation and the impact it has on communities. Stakeholders are optimistic that the collaborative efforts from various organizations and the government will lead to a more sustainable solution to food insecurity in Nigeria.

Nigeria is making strides in autism awareness with its biggest screening drive on World Autism Day 2026, promoting inclusion and understanding.

Historically, autism awareness in Nigeria has faced significant challenges, with many misconceptions surrounding the condition. Prior to recent developments, the understanding of autism was limited, and access to screening and support services was scarce. This lack of awareness contributed to stigmatization and a general lack of resources for those affected.

However, a decisive moment has arrived as Nigeria marks World Autism Day on April 2, 2026, with its largest-ever autism screening initiative. The event, titled “Spark a Spectrum of Possibilities 2026,” aims to provide free screenings and consultations to the public, addressing the urgent need for early detection and support.

As part of the celebrations, Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo‑Okeke is undertaking a remarkable 500 km cycling journey to raise awareness and funds for autism support. This initiative not only highlights the importance of physical activity but also serves as a platform to engage the community in discussions about autism.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1 in 127 people is diagnosed with autism globally, making it one of the top 10 brain health conditions contributing to health loss worldwide. The theme for the 2026 World Autism Awareness Day, “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value,” emphasizes the need for understanding and inclusion.

Oluremi Tinubu, a prominent advocate for autism awareness, stated, “At a time when misinformation and harmful narratives about autism sometimes reemerge, we must remain steadfast in promoting understanding, inclusion and equal opportunities for all.” This sentiment reflects a growing recognition of the importance of accurate information and support for individuals with autism.

Moreover, evidence-based psychosocial interventions have been shown to improve communication and social skills for autistic individuals, further underscoring the necessity of accessible resources and support systems.

The shift in Nigeria’s approach to autism awareness represents a significant step forward, not only for those diagnosed but also for their families and communities. By fostering an environment of understanding and support, Nigeria is paving the way for a more inclusive society.

As the country continues to embrace these changes, the hope is that more individuals will receive the help they need, ultimately leading to a better quality of life for those affected by autism.

Details remain unconfirmed.
