The Nigerian government has announced plans to abolish the National Common Entrance Examination, a significant shift in the country’s educational landscape. This reform aims to replace the traditional examination with a new Learner Identification Number (LIN) system, which will track pupils throughout their academic journey.

According to Tunji Alausa, a key figure in the reform, “It will be replaced by Continuous Assessment, CA. The CA will reflect the performance of the pupil from primary one.” This change is expected to provide a more comprehensive view of a student’s capabilities and progress, rather than relying solely on a single examination.

Currently, Nigeria has over 50,000 public primary schools with more than 23 million pupils enrolled. However, only about 3 million of these pupils transition to junior secondary school, leaving approximately 20 million pupils not enrolled in public secondary schools. The government is focusing on improving access to education and tracking of pupils to address this gap.

The introduction of the LIN will begin at the primary level, allowing for better monitoring of students’ educational paths. Alausa emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “If someone is expected to be in JSS1 and he is not there, we will be able to know the reason why he is not continuing his education.”

In addition to the LIN, the Nigerian government is collaborating with state governments to build more schools, aiming to enhance educational access across the country. Alausa noted, “The issue is simply lack of access and we are working on that.”

Efforts are also underway to revive the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, which is expected to support student retention and performance. The government’s comprehensive approach reflects a commitment to improving the educational system in Nigeria.

As these reforms are set to take effect, observers are keenly watching how the implementation of the LIN and Continuous Assessment will impact student performance and enrollment rates.
