Tragic Outcome of BBL Surgery
A young woman died following complications from a secondary Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Lagos on March 9, 2026. The deceased, identified as Elena Jessica, initially sought the procedure at another clinic, Indigo, but was turned away due to concerns about her skin tone.
Indigo informed her that her skin was ‘too light’ to safely proceed with the surgery. Subsequently, she underwent the procedure at Cynosure, where it reportedly became infected.

Elena experienced intense pain just two days after the operation and was found to have a high white blood cell count, indicating a severe infection. Her family struggled to secure a bed at LUTH for her treatment as she battled sepsis, a life-threatening condition.
During her critical post-operative care, loved ones alleged that hospital staff abandoned her, raising serious questions about the quality of care provided at Cynosure. Reports indicate that Elena required five pints of blood transfusions and faced exorbitant medical costs, including N1.5 million for a single day in the intensive care unit at Emel Hospital and an additional N6 million for the removal of infected fat.
