On April 13, 2026, the Federal Government of Nigeria took a significant step towards enhancing skills acquisition by opening applications for the second cohort of the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme. The application portal opened at 4:00 PM (WAT), inviting individuals eager to improve their vocational skills.
Participants in the programme will receive a monthly stipend of N22,500 throughout their training, which aims to provide fully funded education across various technical fields. The training areas include electrical installation, welding and fabrication, digital media, automobile repairs, fashion design, agriculture, and renewable energy.
The programme consists of two main tracks: a six-month Short-Term Certificate programme and a one-year Vocational Education and Innovation track. This structure is designed to cater to diverse learning needs and career aspirations.
To apply, candidates must provide a valid National Identification Number and Bank Verification Number, ensuring a streamlined application process. The initiative is part of the government’s broader human capital development strategy, which aims to boost employment and skill levels in Nigeria.
In the first phase of the programme, over 1.3 million applications were received, highlighting the high demand for vocational training among Nigerians. This second cohort is expected to attract even more participants, as the government emphasizes the importance of practical training in high-demand sectors such as construction, ICT, automotive technology, and creative media.
Maruf Tunji Alausa, a key figure in the initiative, stated, “In strengthening this programme, the Federal Government is investing in the productive capacity of our youth. By providing practical training and recognised certification, we are creating pathways for self-employment, innovation, and long-term economic growth.”
The Federal Ministry of Education will collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism to enhance training in creative and cultural trades, aiming to unlock the vast potential of Nigeria’s creative economy.
This initiative follows the release of N4.7 billion in December 2025 as the first tranche of payments to trainees and accredited centres under the TVET skills development programme. The funding underscores the government’s commitment to improving vocational education.
As the application period progresses, the Federal Government encourages all Nigerians, regardless of age, to seize this opportunity. Tunji Alausa remarked, “We are calling on every Nigerian, young or old, who has a dream, a vision for a better life, and a hardworking spirit to sign up. With TVET, you can build your own future.”
